Unlike many forms of cancer that develop without clear preventive pathways, cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable. Caused primarily by persistent infection with high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), it develops slowly over several years. This predictable timeline gives us a distinct window of opportunity to intervene, protect, and treat early.

Understanding how your protection strategy evolves across your lifespan ensures you take the right steps at the right time.

HPV Vaccination Schedule by Age Group.

Age Group

Primary Action

Strategy & Guidance

Ages 9 – 14

Primary Prevention (HPV Vaccine)

Golden Window: Ideal time for vaccination before exposure to the virus. Requires 2 doses spaced 6 months apart for strong, long-lasting immunity.

Ages 15 – 26

Catch-Up Vaccination

Vaccine Window: Catch-up vaccination is highly recommended. Requires 3 doses (at 0, 1–2, and 6 months) to achieve full protection.

Ages 25 – 29

Regular Screening

Pap Smear Every 3 Years: Routine screening begins. A Pap smear checks for abnormal cellular changes on the cervix before they turn into cancer.

Ages 30 – 65

Combined Screening

Co-testing Every 5 Years: HPV DNA test combined with a Pap smear (or HPV test alone every 5 years / Pap smear every 3 years) offers maximum protection.

Ages 65+

Personal Consultation

Individual Assessment: Screening may be stopped if previous test results over the past 10 years have been consistently negative.

Key Steps Beyond Vaccination and Screening

  • Safe Hygiene & Protection: Barrier methods during sexual intercourse reduce HPV transmission risk.

  • Avoid Tobacco: Smoking doubles the risk of cervical pre-cancer developing into invasive cancer.

  • Pay Attention to Warning Signs: Seek immediate medical advice for unusual vaginal bleeding (between periods or after intercourse), pelvic pain, or abnormal discharge.
